The Granville

RIDI Lighting have provided the core lighting to The Granville community Hub in North London. The Granville is a workspace and community hub in South Kilburn that is a truly ambitious example of mixed-use, community-led regeneration. Set in a former 19th century church hall, the centre is the result of a two-year long partnership between a diverse range of project partners and local people determined to bring this treasured community asset back into full use. It offers affordable workspace to local entrepreneurs; provides space for community events; houses SKT and its charitable work including business advice, employment training and resident activities; and incorporates existing uses ranging from a children’s centre to a community kitchen.

RCKa Architects created this transformation of the space on a challenging budget and produced what resembles a raw exhibition style look. Working with a lot of simple natural site construction materials, the architect wanted a simple but bold lighting scheme to transform the place. RIDI’s VENICE luminaire was selected due to its robust design, performance and good value. The solid simple look of the product was also important in tying the modern simplistic interior with the traditional exposed steel internal roof finishes of this period building.

The VENICE, supplied with opal diffusers, were painted in a bold blue colour to tie in with the structure of the staircases and handrails throughout the building – which was also taken as one of the colours from the logo. The lighting offered a bold contrast in the white background space while providing a good volume of working light. VENICE is also a sustainable product that can be maintained in the future due to its plug-in LED lighting gear tray module.

“The potential of the studios is in the ability of someone to come in and transform the space, to make it their own. It really separates The Granville from almost anything else out there.”
