Space Woking is a new 7 storey office development in the heart of Woking designed to a market-leading specification and benefiting from impressive sustainability credentials – the building has an EPC A(21) rating and a target BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating. In order to have an appropriate lighting system the designers chose RIDI Lighting to supply a complete package, including controls, to the entire site
Designed by architects Scott Brownrigg, the building’s dominant feature is its faceted glass, and generous ceiling heights. They desired a light airy feel to the offices and working together with RHB M+E Consulting Engineers, they opted for RIDI’s ARKTIK-PS luminaire as the main luminaire fixture. These feature a fully serviceable backlit LED body with a moulded flowing diffuser made from light opal and with a contrasting microprism strip to provide an additional punch of light. This has the advantage of providing an element of upward light as well as good vertical lighting to meet the requirements of LG7. Specially adapted to fit an SAS130 ceiling, the design also featured an adjustable two-step position for the drop-down diffuser. This meant it could be set fully extended for maximum uplight or retracted for a different ambience.
Working closely with Rushmore Mechanical services, RIDI provided their DALI based control system together with all the marshalling boxes and pre-fitted leads so that over 900 x ARKTIK luminaires as well as nearly 300 x EDLR downlighters (on the periphery of each floor) could be quickly installed. The system is used across the entire building and also does the emergency monitoring over DALI – mainly monitoring the compact RIDI EXIDA stand-alone emergency lighting heads in the open office space. This offers a lot of flexibility on a floor by floor basis for the Facilities Managers of the building.
To complete the project, RIDI’s VENICE luminaire was used as the linear lighting to all core areas in horizontal and vertical orientations. Brightgreen D700+ compact downlighters were used in all the WC facilities and RIDI’s PFAG luminaires were used across al functional areas including the underground car-park.
Finally, RIDI worked together with Alurays to supply an external grade, silicone based narrow strip lighting system to the external canopies on both the ground and 7th floor viewing areas. These fanned the curved canopies which are a striking feature by night.
