88 Wood Street

A circular economy story

The 88 Wood Street development lies in the heart of the City of London. This iconic Rogers Stirk Harbour skyscraper started construction in the early 1990’s and is a series of linked structures going up to 18 stories. In 2020 a fit-out in this commercial office space commenced to give a contemporary conversion of the original building design, one that would produce a modern feel with high quality detailing and top-quality materials.

The refurbishment is also a prime example of good circular economy design put into practice with the reuse of an existing structure and choice of appropriate materials accordingly. The core areas had the original concrete structure exposed and an appropriate quality of fixture was required. RIDI Group were able to offer an appropriate lighting scheme and together with architects Morrow+Lorraine and RHB Building Services, the core product selected for the office floors was Spectral’s own iconic H80 profile system. RIDI EDLR downlighters were used within the suspended rafts that lay in between the linear lighting runs.

The H-PROFIL system has been in Spectral’s portfolio for over 20 years and is one of the most robust systems on the market. Constructed from two heavy gauge T profiles, the system offers total versatility in construction and has been a carrier of many light sources in its lifetime. Today’s H-PROFIL offers a product that will not only last the lifetime of the building but is also designed to be refurbished and maintained for decades to come. A true example of a product designed for the Circular Economy. The EDLR downlighters also feature remove and replace light modules for future serviceability.

The design for the main H-PROFIL product involved a low-glare linear light source with integrated adjustable spotlights at either end of the 2.4m lengths. A separately controllable uplight was also built-in. These could be adjusted during commissioning in order to avoid high peaks where building services run over the top of the luminaire runs. All light modules and components are designed to be maintained in the future without the need for removal or replacement of the core H-PROFIL structure.

All lighting is controlled by RIDI Group’s Control 3 DALI system that is commissioned on a separate tenant and landlord arrangement. The system monitors daylight with associated dimming to save energy, emergency testing, absence detection and central monitoring. The system also enables the main luminaire light balance to be tuned so that uplight and downlight can be adjusted for certain moods. Finally RIDI Group offer a service pack under its 360 program to support this system for years to come.
